How Are Sand Casting Kits Made?
Sand casting is an ancient art that was used to create miniature sand structures for the purpose of using it as an alternative to mortar or cement when constructing homes and other types of buildings. Today, sand casting is often used to make sand toys for children and other purposes such as playing houses, furniture, statues, and much more. One of the most important inventions of mankind was the discovery of fire, which allowed people to use this method to heat metals and melt them so that they could be made into tools and other inventions. Sand casting is a process where molten sand is forced at very high speeds through a nozzle at very high pressure. The first prototypes of sand casting happened about 100 years ago in Italy. The procedure was very crude and it did not produce very accurate results but it was very useful because it was possible to quickly form various shapes from small pieces of sand. Since sand casting was so successful, companies quickly developed sand modules which could be added to the initial batch of molten sand at a later time. These modular sand modules would then be joined together to form a final product that would be used as home furniture, miniature vehicles, statues, and other types of miniature structures.
The parts or sub-assemblies that are cast from the sand modules would need to have some type of support while the molten metal was being pulled through the nozzle. The parts or sub-assemblies were built up in the mold from the inside out and once the support plates were melted into the interior of the mold cavity the mold was cooled off and opened back up to reveal the finished product. In order for the parts of the item to have the same flush appearance, the mold cavity would need to be carefully removed and sanded to remove any excess metal that might have been left behind after the assembly of the components. Once the individual parts were properly reassembled, the mold cavity was leveled and the support plate was sanded off to produce a smooth surface.
Sand Casting Kits was first developed by the Czech Republic’s State Office for Metal casts in Prague in 1970. They called their design Pintels which stood for “little men”. The original design concept was that molten metal would be shot through a small hole in the top of the pintel which would force its way down into the base of the miniature figure. One of the first companies to use this concept was Vltava, which was ahead of its time as many other companies attempted to duplicate their design but failed. Vltava’s designers designed a new casting system using sand and a cone-shaped ejector to shoot the molten metal through the holes in the top of the pintel while leaving a fine dust residue. This retained the metal piece in its place, producing a smoother, more professional finish than any of the competition.
There are two basic designs which have the potential to work in virtually any model railroad. There is the “pinned” or boxed design, where the first two or three faces of the cast piece fit tightly into their respective support plates while the last face is left free. There is also the “hinge” design, which is exactly as it sounds. The base of the cast piece is supported by an extendable pin that forms a hinge on the side of the support plate. Another method used in Sand Casting Kits involves placing a sand mold into the hot molten metal and then heating it up so that the mold can “wiggle” its way into the support post.
The finished product is then trimmed to the desired shape with a grinding wheel and a lathe tool. This process is called “shaping” and was the first method used to cast large quantities of metal.
